Raritan Council Race Called Prematurely by DEM Candidates

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

At 2:30 in the morning, just hours after the closing of polls in New Jersey, Councilman Orozco called the race for himself and for his running mates. While 19 days remained until the vote was to be certified by the Somerset County Board of Elections, Orozco stated, "it is safe to say that we have won!" While the Democrats maintained an early lead, nearly 1,000 more votes were to be tallied.

With all votes counted, it was clear; Councilman Patente won his race against Democratic candidate Diane Bautista, 1,835 to 1,802, for the unexpired term vacated by Mayor Bray in January. Bray defeated Orozco in last year's Mayoral race 975 to 660; Patente was appointed to fill the seat until a special election was held to see who would fill the remaining 13 months of Bray's term. This was Diane's second bid for a seat on the Raritan Borough Council, losing last year's Council race to incumbents Council President Carra and Councilman Girardi.
